On 16 January 2009, the President of Kenya declared the severe drought and livelihood crisis a national disaster. According to the appeal, 10 million people are facing acute food shortages. The main cause of the severe food insecurity is the poor performance of the recent rainy Season.
OUR APPROACH
Due to present extreme conditions in Kenya resulting from the past drought, we are currently conducting feed activities each month.
The money that is needed for famine feeds is calculated by predicting how much we can afford to spend on food each month.
Once we determine which populations we work with are in most need we organize famine feeds where we divide the purchased food amongst the poor.
Many of the poor who receive food from this program have to travel a long distance to get their food portions though we never have enough food.
We serve children and mothers first but never have enough for all who need it and it is heart wrenching to have to turn people away when the food runs out
